Physical Activity and Nutrition INfluences In ageing (PANINI): consortium mission statement
2018
First paragraph: Current demographic trends indicate that by the year 2020, almost one in five of the European population will be aged 65 years or over. Although life expectancy is increasing by 2 years per decade, the period of life spent in good health is not keeping pace and most Europeans spend their last decade in poor health. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand how lifestyle factors can influence age-related changes from gene to society level and how they may be integrated into a net effect of healthy ageing. It is also crucial to develop and validate interventions and health policies to ensure that more of our older adults have a healthy and active later life. This is…
Growth rate controls mRNA turnover in steady and non-steady states.
2016
Gene expression has been investigated in relation with growth rate in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, following different experimental strategies. The expression of some specific gene functional categories increases or decreases with growth rate. Our recently published results have unveiled that these changes in mRNA concentration with growth depend on the relative alteration of mRNA synthesis and decay, and that, in addition to this gene-specific transcriptomic signature of growth, global mRNA turnover increases with growth rate. We discuss here these results in relation with other previous and concurrent publications, and we add new evidence which indicates that growth rate controls m…
Temperature-dependent small RNA expression in Drosophila melanogaster
2018
Temperature has a major impact on gene expression in ectotherms. But until recently, it was not clear in which way, if any, small non-coding RNAs such as miRNAs or piRNAs contribute to thermosensitive gene regulation. We have recently shown that temperature-responsive miRNAs in Drosophila drive adaptation to different ambient temperatures on the transcriptome level. Moreover, we demonstrated that higher temperatures lead to a more efficient piRNA-dependent transposon silencing, possibly due to heat-induced unfolding of RNA secondary structures. In this commentary, we will dwell upon particular interesting aspects connected to our findings, hoping that our point of view may encourage other s…
If you can defend your own point of view, you're good : Norms of voice construction in student writing on an international Master's programme
2019
Abstract This ethnographically oriented study followed the writing experiences of four students on an international masters programme in Finland. Gathering a range of data, the study set out to examine what counts as good writing on a programme with a very diverse student body in which English is used as a lingua franca. Both teachers and students emphasised the importance of arguing one's ‘own point of view’ in academic writing, and teachers often formed impressions of students on the basis of their texts, drawing attention particularly to their use of metadiscourse markers (e.g., self-mentions, attitude markers and hedges). The present article therefore combines a quantitative analysis of…
“Facts Are Grasped by Us in Pictures (PT, 2.1). Remarks on Pictures and Facts in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus
2023
This paper proposes a (re)reading of the famous section in the Tractatus Logico-philosophicus, 2.1: “We picture facts to ourselves” and its relation to the similar section in the Prototractatus, 2.1: “Facts are grasped by us in images”. We reject the dominant solution that interprets the relation between facts and images as an isomorphic relation and propose that instead it is an internal relation: there are no facts that are not perceived through images. In other words: For us, linguistic animals, there is no world independent of language.
Recommendations for a nomenclature system for reporting methylation aberrations in imprinted domains
2018
The analysis of DNA methylation has become routine in the pipeline for diagnosis of imprinting disorders, with many publications reporting aberrant methylation associated with imprinted differentially methylated regions (DMRs). However, comparisons between these studies are routinely hampered by the lack of consistency in reporting sites of methylation evaluated. To avoid confusion surrounding nomenclature, special care is needed to communicate results accurately, especially between scientists and other health care professionals. Within the European Network for Human Congenital Imprinting Disorders we have discussed these issues and designed a nomenclature for naming imprinted DMRs as well …
Riconoscimento come vincolo etico delle società pluraliste. Una lettura habermasiana
2021
The essay aims at investigating Habermas' point of view as regards the topic of the relationship between pluralism and ethical bound, which characterizes the contemporary post-secular society.
Molte Palermo. Temi
2019
Note su Kant.
2017
The writings dedicated to law and politics do not constitute a mere appendix to Kant’s critical project, but an essential aspect of it, since they contribute to delineating the strictly human horizon of reason and its claims and expectations. Moreover, the entire cosmopolitical peace project, in view of which Kant reads the history of the human species, must be included under the philosophical sign of a goal, a destination, which is assigned to man by the possibility of using reason. Each individual’s belonging to the human species cannot be defined solely in relation to a predetermined physiological outfit, but requires to be mediated by the ability to share with other men the tasks that a…
Estraneità e onniscienza. Sulla non-fiction contemporanea
2021
The article reinterprets the narratological category of omniscience applied to the field of non-fiction and after a theoretical preamble we examine two particular cases of contemporary Italian fiction: "Submerged city" by Marta Barone and "Nature is innocent" by Walter Siti
